GCR 5.1 Martha Grace Reese Unbinding the Gospel and Mainline Evangelism

“Evangelism” has become a scary word in many mainline congregations, even scarier for those outside of the church. But if sharing our faith is an essential part of our spiritual health, not to mention the health of our congregations, how can it be done in a way that takes away some of the anxiety?

Martha Grace Reese shares her insights from her work with the Mainline Evangelism Project as well as some of the helpful tips from the “Unbinding” series with Carol. Carol and new co-host Derrick Weston then discuss some of their previous history with evangelism in their pasts and their hopes for it in the church.

I had an interesting observation. Mainliners find evangelism odd and some Evangelicals find unconditional love odd, yet Mainliners often exhibit it much better than Evangelicals. I was recently a part of an evangelical church that changed their mission statement about 4 years ago to “love God and love others unconditionally” and there were literally church leaders who questioned this and wanted to know what it meant to love unconditionally. Their fear was that it would mean accepting people regardless of their sin and I find it unconscionable that people could spend so much time in the church and not understand unconditional love. I knew then there was much work to be done.

Oh, if we could blend the best of the Mainline church and the Evangelical church…..

Pat… that’s really interesting. It gives me some insight on some of the odd Twitter conversations that we have sometimes with people who are moving away from evangelicalism. Thanks for telling us about it.

See this blog here? It's like we're having a party, and everyone wants to have a good time at a party, right? It's cool if you want to be critical, but if you're rude, well...then you won't get to party any more. And that would suck. So don't be rude.
